IRI(A) Instrument Rating

The goal of the IR training is being able to fly and control an aircraft regardless of any outer indications but exclusively with the help of the on board instruments and the support of the flight controller on the ground.

Requirements

  • CPL(A) or PPL(A) including license of night rating and 50 h cross country flights being the pilot in command
  • at least aviation medical class 2 with the additional checkup of pure-tone audiometry
  • English knowledge certificate (AZF)

Theoretical training

The theoretical part of the training contains the following 7 subjects:

  • Air Law
  • Aircraft General Knowledge - Instruments
  • Flight Planning and Monitoring
  • Human Peformance
  • Meteorology
  • Radio Navigation
  • IR Radio Communication (AZF)

The distance learning course for the acquisition of the IR rating contains educational material structured into six subjects.

The addional classroom lesson course at AEROTOURS ATO in Strausberg only amounts to 30 lesson hours. The theoretical training has to be completed within 18 months.

The distance learning course for the training of the IR(A) is the most modern way for obtaining the Instrument Rating. You can start at any time.

Practical training

Having passed the theoretical examination at LBA there are three years left to complete the practical training until its expiration.

The IR(A) practical training for one-engine aircraft contains 50 lesson hours of instrument flight training.

If you would like to acquire the IR(A) rating for MEP aircraft, the class rating MEP VFR (6 h) as well as an IR(A) MEP training are needed.

The training is structured into two modules, which can either be completed seperately or in a combined way:

Should you already hold a CPL(A) license or should you have already completed module A (basics on instrument flight), the training period is reduced by 10 lesson hours.
